Getting to Tahoe and Getting Around:

Airports

  • Reno International Airport (RNO): The most obvious airport to fly into when traveling to Lake Tahoe is the Reno International Airport. Often offering many cheap flights from around the country, it takes about 45minutes to get to Truckee and other Lake Tahoe destinations from the Reno Airport. Reno Airport.
  • Sacramento International Airport (SMF): While not as inexpensive as Reno, the Sacramento International Airport is only 2 hours from Truckee and Lake Tahoe. You might be able to find some good deals into this airport and avoid the hustle and bustle of flying into San Francisco. Sacramento Airport.
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO): While it’s the furthest airport of those listed from Lake Tahoe it also makes for easy planning. You can usually rent a car right from the airport and it’s a great option if you want to visit other California destinations in addition to Lake Tahoe. San Francisco Airport.
  • Truckee Tahoe Aiport: This airport is accessible to private planes and scenic flights only. It offers the best access to the area if you have your own plane. Truckee Tahoe Airport.

Buses

Greyhound offers daily bus service to the Truckee Train Depot from Reno, Sacramento and San Francisco. It’s the cheapest way to get to Truckee but can provide for some lengthy bus rides and inconvenient arrival/departure times. You’ll also need to plan for transportation within and around Lake Tahoe once you arrive so call us to reserve additional Tahoe transportation.

Tahoe Area Regional Transit is the local ground transportation service, offering inexpensive buses around the lake. See the full schedule.

Train

Take the train to Tahoe. The California Zephyr is a fun experience for anyone who is traveling to the area for the first time. It’s only about 6 ½ hours from San Francisco and 1 hour to Reno. Amtrak drops you off right in downtown Truckee. Call us for a ride to your hotel or lodge.

Car Rentals

Rental cars are available at the Reno, Sacramento, and San Francisco Airports, as well as a few locations around Lake Tahoe. A car rental is a great option for traveling in the summer or if you are visiting more than one destination in the area. Keep in mind that Tahoe roads are covered with snow and ice during the winter months. If you aren’t used to driving in snow, don’t test your skills in Tahoe. Hiring a taxi or shuttle might be your best bet to get around, especially during the ski season.

Shuttles and Taxis

Truckee and Lake Tahoe shuttles and taxis are widely available, but they don’t wait on every corner like major cities. If you foresee needing a shuttle or taxi make sure to call ahead of time.
